What is safe ice for ice fishing?

There is a saying that no ice is safe because there are many factors to consider, including thickness, age, snow cover, water current, waterfowl usage and more. A good rule of thumb is that 4 inches of new, hard ice is enough for a person walking. Never ice fish alone, make test holes as you venture out, and always err on the side of caution.
