2007 SPRING TURKEY HUNTING REGULATION APPROVED

Archery-only season, expansion of Unit 3 included in changes
PRATT -- The Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission has finalized provisions for the 2007 spring turkey hunting season. At their Oct. 26 public hearing in Chanute, commissioners approved a regular season almost identical to 2006 but also approved a separate archery-only season and modified turkey unit boundaries.

The regular season, which allows the use of either firearms or archery equipment, will run April 11-May 31. In addition, commissioners approved an archery-only spring turkey season of April 1-10. A special season for youth and disabled hunters will run April 6-8.

Another change approved for 2007 was the expansion of Unit 3 into northcentral Kansas, which allows hunters in that area of the state to take a second gobbler with a second turkey game tag. Second turkey game tags are available only in units 2 (eastern Kansas) and 3 (southcentral, central, and northcentral Kansas). The boundary change was proposed by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) staff to accommodate a growing turkey population in central and northcentral Kansas, especially in the eastern portions of units 1 and 4.

KDWP anticipates that 42,000 spring turkey permits and 14,600 second turkey game tags will be issued in 2007.
