WILDLIFE AND PARKS STOCKS MILLIONS OF FISH IN 2006

From bass and bluegill to sauger and walleye, Kansas anglers have it all
PRATT -- The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has completed its 2006 stocking of fish raised in state hatcheries at Farlington, Meade, Milford, and Pratt, including millions of fish from newly-hatched to 8 inches long. Approximately 74.7 million predaceous fish -- including intermediate (5-8 inches), fingerling (1 1/2 inches), and fry (newly-hatched) -- were stocked in the state’s waters. Almost 3 million channel catfish fry, 435,000 intermediates, 1.2 million fingerlings, and 2,000 adult channel catfish were stocked. In addition, 718,240 bluegill and 635,000 redear sunfish were stocked.

Predaceous fish stockings included 517,280 walleye fingerlings and 55 million walleye fry; 19,000 intermediate wipers and 4.67 million wiper fry; 12,000 intermediate largemouth bass and 335,000 largemouth bass fry; 11,000 fingerling smallmouth bass, and 124,000 smallmouth bass fry. Sauger stocking included 1.5 million fry. Saugeye stocking included 538,000 fingerlings and 3.4 million fry.

In addition, the agency will stock 167,000 trout during the Oct. 15-April 15 trout season.

Stocking fish on this scale is made possible through the hard work of dedicated employees at KDWP's four hatcheries and is paid for by Kansas anglers through fishing license sales and excise taxes on fishing equipment.
