Kansas premier outdoor magazine a treat for all outdoor people
PRATT--The September/October 2007 issue of Kansas Wildlife & Parks magazine will be in readers hands on September 1. As with all issues, this magazine has a variety of outdoor-related articles illustrated with color photography, as well as timely information on hunting, fishing, conservation issues, law enforcement and wildlife education. Whatever your outdoor interests, you’ll find interesting reading.
This year’s devastating floods lie in sharp contrast to droughts of the past few years. Tommie Berger, fisheries biologist for the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks, authors a fascinating look at the contrast of weather cycles on the Great Plains. Roller coaster extremes affect all Kansans through impacts on economy, water reserves, and recreation. The article provides history and explanation of water cycles in our state, and stresses the importance and function of Kansas waterways and aquifers. Sidebars written by other KDWP managers and biologists explain how this year’s rains might affect wildlife populations, hunting seasons, waterfowl, state parks, and fisheries. “Digital Eyes,” explores the use of trail cameras as round-the-clock recorders of wildlife activity for agency photographer Mike Blair. Blair explains how to set and maintain trail cameras, as well as what to look for when purchasing scouting cameras for personal use. Other topics include tularemia and its possible implications for Kansas hunters, Topeka shiner research, advanced furharvester education, and dove management.
