Open to general public, event designed to help landowners improve quail habitat

CHANUTE -- The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks has announced that the 2007 Southeast Kansas Bobwhite Symposium will be held in the Chanute Memorial Auditorium on Oct. 3. The event will be open at no cost and is designed for both experienced and beginning land managers. The public is invited to participate.

Professionals from several different agencies, as well as landowners, will speak on a wide range of land-management topics designed to improve quail habitat. No pre- registration is required.

The program will begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude at approximately 4:30 p.m. Lunch is not included. Topics will include the following:

• bobwhite biology and management;
• predators and quail;
• fragmentation -- the hidden bobwhite menace;
• replacing fescue with native grasses and forbs;
• prescribed burning;
• grazing management of native grass for cows and quail;
• farm bill programs and bobwhites; and
• landowner testimonials.
