KANSAN NAMED 2007 QUAIL UNLIMITED ADOPT-A-COVEY REGIONAL WINNER

Greensburg man honored for wildlife habitat work; 2008 applications now available
GREENSBURG -- Jason Johnson of Paradise Island Farms, near Greensburg, was recently recognized as the 2007 Quail Unlimited/Budweiser Adopt-A-Covey Central Plains Regional Award winner by Bob Peterson, Quail Unlimited (QU) Central Plains regional director. Peterson selected Johnson from applicants enrolled throughout his eight-state region

“Johnson’s habitat management efforts are focused and complete, allowing suitable and permanent quail cover to be established on his property," Peterson noted. "His overall conservation plan used numerous resources to achieve solid quail management goals and objectives."

“I hope that my efforts -- successes and failures -- will provide some inspiration to others and show them what can be done if you’re committed to conservation,” Johnson explained. “I used to complain about the decline in quail populations, and I finally decided I had to do something about it. Now it’s my turn to carry the torch and prove that with some hard work, we can bring back bobwhites."

A signup period for the 2008 Adopt-A-Covey program is currently open for cooperators, and there are a several levels of participation. One level is as simple as completing the enrollment form and submitting it to QU. The form is available online at www.qu.org/adopt_a_covey.cfm. The deadline for submissions is May 31.

The form serves as a reminder and outline for landowners and managers to develop management practices that could be incorporated into quail management plans. There is no cost to submit an application documenting habitat improvements. However, landowners who complete and submit habitat enrollment applications will receive a free gate sign to display on their property and a habitat management booklet. In addition to being recognized with a sign and a habitat booklet, entries will be evaluated and judged on a regional basis. Winners will be chosen based on the quality and quantity of management activities conducted on their property.
