36 youngsters to be given chance to hunt chukars; Oct. 13 registration deadline
HAYS — The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP), in cooperation with Pheasant Runn and the Hunting Heritage Group, Inc.(HHG), will host the third annual youth upland hunt in memory of former youth hunt volunteer Darrell Brown. The hunt will take place on Oct. 24 about 30 miles west of Hays at Pheasant Runn Controlled Shooting Area.

Thirty-six youngsters ages 12 through 18 will be given the opportunity to harvest at least four chukars while hunting over seasoned pointing dogs. Participants not only hunt but will be taught a variety of other subjects, including how to hunt with pointing dogs, dog training, field safety, gun handling, how to clean and prepare harvested birds, and what type of habitat to look for when hunting upland birds. The D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program is also incorporated into the event.

After the hunt, a number of items donated by local sponsors will be raffled, including a 20-gauge shotgun, a lifetime hunting license, a guided fishing trip, and a two-day guided upland bird hunt.

Special hunts like this are part of the Kansas Hunter Recruitment and Retention Program called "PASS IT ON." This program addresses the need to recruit new hunters and retain existing hunters in order to ensure the future of hunting.
