Westar Energy Invites Area Youth To Guided Turkey Hunts

TOPEKA – Westar Energy invites eligible youth to participate in spring turkey hunts April 1-17 at Jeffrey Energy Center, 7 miles north of St. Marys. The youth-season event – open to novice hunters age 12 to 16 who have never harvested a turkey – is supported by experienced hunters and volunteers of the Westar Energy Green Team, who will serve as guides to youth hunters and their mentors.

Youth must be accompanied by an adult mentor, preferably one without turkey hunting experience. A shotgun is required, but no special clothing, calls or decoys are needed. Hunters age 15 and younger will need to purchase a youth spring turkey permit. Hunters who are 16 must have a Hunter Education certificate and a hunting license or an apprentice hunting license and will need to purchase a Unit 3 turkey permit.

Hunts will take place in enclosed blinds around small crop fields scattered throughout the plant’s property, where turkeys are abundant. Most hunts will take place in the mornings and on weekends, but weekdays and afternoons are possible based on volunteer guide availability.

Registration is open through Friday, March 16, or until all slots are filled. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to youth with inexperienced mentors. To apply, please call (785) 575-6355.

The Westar Energy Green Team is a group of employees and retiree volunteers who take on environmental projects across Kansas. The group completes 50 to 70 projects per year on weekends and evenings and collaborates with conservation groups, agencies and schools to enhance and foster a better understanding of the Kansas environment.
