After years of drought in the mid 2000's, the lake completely refilled and actually overflowed through the outlet in summer 2010. It has remained within 3 foot of that level throughout the last 2 years.

JWSL 2011 fishing

Surrounded by grassland hills, Jewell State Lake was constructed primarily as a fishing area. This normally heavily used lake is between Glen Elder and Lovewell Reservoirs and provides a sheltered retreat not found on the bigger waters. The area and surrounding grassland vegetation is native prairie grasses, woodland trees and shrubs.

The fishery currently has largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, saugeye, and walleye. Five fishing piers are available around the lake to increase fishing access. Two fish feeders are used to improve growth and condition of the fish.

Public hunting is allowed, but due to the small land area, opportunities are limited. Pheasant, quail, turkey, dove, fox squirrel, rabbit, mule and whitetail deer, waterfowl, furbearers and many song birds and non-game wildlife inhabit or pass through and use the area. Food plots encourage wildlife to use the area and supplement the food provided by the native plants and surrounding agricultural lands.

Furharvesters’ Volunteer Weekend at Jewell State Fishing Lake

The Kansas Furharvester’s Association- District 3 group came out to Jewell State Fishing Lake this past weekend on June 11

th

and 12

th

for their annual work day and campout. The group has been assisting the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) with maintenance and enhancement projects at the lake since 1996.

Early Saturday morning, District 3 members were ready to go to work for the day under the supervision of KDWP employees Toby Marlier and Curt Shoemaker. This year’s projects included: concrete construction of a retaining curb and sidewalk section at the group shelterhouse; marker posts were installed, painted, and capped next to all 9 fire rings; and 2 large signs were stained and repainted.

The Furharvesters’ work crew this year was Cleo, Miranda, and Marcus Hahn; Roger and Donna Macy; Jerry Koster; and Eldon Dunstan. At the end of the day a cookout was held at the group shelter that was enjoyed by friends and supporters of the group. After supper, a couple of the members took advantage of the fast paced bluegill fishing available that evening.

If you would like to learn more about or get involved with the Furharvester’s Association, please contact Cleo Hahn at 785-346-4541 or Roger Macy at 785-346-2076.
