KAW RIVER FLOAT TRIP SCHEDULED FOR OCT. 13

Five-mile float trip brings water enthusiasts to one of state's treasures
LAWRENCE -- The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) is teaming with Friends of the Kaw on Saturday, Oct. 13, for a 5-mile float trip down the Kansas River. Participants will meet at the Eudora Ramp at noon and shuttle back to Mud Creek. The float should take approximately five hours, ending at Eudora around 5 p.m.

The Kansas River -- often referred to as the "Kaw" -- is a recreational treasure and has been a well-kept secret among a few paddlers and anglers, but it is fast becoming a valued recreational resource for thousands of visitors each year. The Kansas River is one of three public rivers in Kansas open to the public for fishing and boating. Permission must be obtained to cross private ground to gain access to the river, except at developed public access sites. KDWP has worked with Friends of the Kaw and local communities along the Kansas River to develop more of these public access points.

More information and registration forms for the float trip are available at the Friends of the Kaw website, www.kansasriver.com. A limited number of canoes and kayaks will be available to rent, or participants may bring their own equipment. Float sponsors advise participants to bring snacks, drinking water, sunscreen, hand cleaner, dry clothing, and any other appropriate gear for the day.
