KDWP TO CONDUCT PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETINGS ON ENDANGERED SPECIES
Six species considered for addition to list, three for removal
TOPEKA -- In accordance with state law (K.S.A. 32-960), the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will conduct public informational meetings to present background information regarding certain species that may be considered for listing or delisting as threatened or endangered species. These meetings coincide with scientific review of the species outside the agency, at least 90 days prior to submission of any proposed listing action to the Wildlife and Parks Commission.
Meetings scheduled include the following:
- Oct. 2, 3 p.m. -- Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Anton Room, 1515 SW 10th Ave., Topeka;
- Oct. 7, 7 p.m. -- Parsons Arboretum, 21st and Briggs in Parsons;
- Oct. 9, 11 a.m. -- WATER Center, 101 E. Pawnee, Wichita; and
- Oct. 30, 7:30 p.m. -- Pittsburg State University, 102 Yates Hall, 1701 S. Broadway, Pittsburg.
Species being discussed and reviewed for listing as threatened or endangered include the delta hydrobe (Probythinella emarginata), American eel (Anguilla rostrata), plains minnow (Hybognathus placitus), shoal chub (Macrhybopsis hyostoma), bigeye shiner (Notropis boops), and redfin darter (Etheostoma whipplei).
Species being discussed and reviewed for delisting from threatened or endangered status include the broadhead skink (Eumeces laticeps), bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), and peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus).
