CHENEY STATE PARK HOSTS MEMORIAL DAY REGATTA MAY 30

Annual Ninnescah Sailing Association event welcomes all classes of sailboats

CHENEY STATE PARK — On Sunday, May 30, the Ninnescah Sailing Association (NSA) will conduct its annual Memorial Day Regatta at Cheney State Park's Sailboat Cove. The day will begin with registration from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by a competitor’s meeting at 10:45 a.m., the Harbor Gun at 11:20 a.m., and the First Class Flag at 11:55 a.m. The first of three races will begin at noon, followed by a 5 p.m. happy hour and Memorial Day dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Participants will have access to the Afterdeck Clubhouse, camping sites, electrical hookups, sandy beaches, restrooms, hot showers, boat ramps, free crane with mast raising device, and guest docks.

All classes of sailboats are welcome. Four or more one-designs make a fleet. All others will sail to Performance Handicap Racing Fleet handicap requirements. State park permits are required, including $4.20 daily vehicle permits, $8.50 overnight camping permits, $7 daily utility hookups, and cabin rental fees (if available, phone 316-542-3664). Regatta entry fees include $10 skipper fees, $5 crew member fees, and $5 youth entrant fees. Fees include a potluck dinner, and regatta guests are welcome.

Trophies will be awarded in each fleet, one trophy per four boats. Regatta rules are governed by the 2009-2012 International Sailing Federation (ISAF), Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS), the prescription of the United States Sailing Association (US Sailing), and local appendixes. The regatta is designated Category B of Appendix G. A boat entering as a member of a one-design class must conform to class rules.

The Ninnescah Sailing Association (NSA) is located on Cheney Reservoir, 30 miles west of Wichita. From Wichita, drive west 25 miles on US Highway 54, turn north on Highway 251, and drive 3.4 miles to 21st Street. Turn west (left) on 21st Street and drive 3.4 miles to Cheney State Park entrance, then north (right) and follow the regatta signs to the NSA at the state park's Sailboat Cove.
