GOVERNOR’S EAGLE DAY PROCLAMATION TIME CHANGED

June 20 proclamation at Great Plains Nature to start at 10:30 a.m.
TOPEKA — The week of June 13, Governor Sam Brownback’s office announced that he would publically declare Monday, June 20, as American Eagle Day in Kansas. The ceremony was to begin at 11:30 at the Great Plains Nature Center, 29th and Woodlawn in Wichita, on that date.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the time of the event has been changed to 10:30 a.m. on June 20.

At that time, Brownback will present a signed proclamation to representatives of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The public is invited to attend and admission is free. Naturalists from the Prairie Park Nature Center in Lawrence will be on hand with a live bald eagle.

The proclamation is in celebration of the bald eagle’s remarkable comeback. Once numbering in the hundreds in the entire lower 48 states, today, eagles are so common that they have been removed entirely from the federal Endangered Species List. In 2010, 34 bald eagle nests were reported in Kansas, and hundreds are sighted each year in the Sunflower State.
