CHEYENNE BOTTOMS - Last Updated: 9/23/2016

Waterfowl numbers We estimate 3,000 to 10,000 total ducks on the Area.   Mostly blue winged teal, mallard and shoveler.  Teal numbers seem to be increasing a bit this week.  Teal hunters need to be careful of immature wood ducks and shovelers on the Area.
Water level Pools 1A is near 45.5", 1B and 1C are around 39.5".  Pool 2 is near 17.5 inches, Pools 3A is about 11 inches, 3B is dry except for trapped water, 4A is about 17.5 inches; 4B is around 18 inches, and Pool 5 has about 9.5".
Hunting conditions Cattail have expanded in area.  A windy early spring prevented burning of mowed cattail and as the season progressed we entered into a very wet period.  This provided us supplemental water for the storage pool (Pool 1).  We plan on keeping Pool 3B dry this fall in an effort to deal with the mowed cattail from last winter and to try and control the cattail expansion.  We were successful in keeping Pools 3A and 4 relatively dry late this summer and as a result we have at least done some Phragmites spraying and mowing of hunting holes in the perimeter and shallow water areas of those pools.  The openings and trails we mowed have greatly improved the marsh for hunting opportunity.  We also cleaned out the boating channels leading from Deadman East and White Rock Parking Lots.
Expected hunting success  Teal hunters averaged about 3.5 teal per hunter for Monday (19th) through Friday (23rd).
