Habitat types include a mix of cropland, woodland, and warm and cool season grasses. Common woodland species include, oak, sycamore, cottonwood, walnut, hackberry, ash, elm, hickory and eastern red cedar. Plum, sumac, and dogwood are common shrubs. During construction of Hillsdale Reservoir more than 70 percent of the standing timber was left within the reservoir basin to provide fish habitat. Walleye, catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill are abundant. Approximately 4,500 acres of water and 51 miles of shoreline are open to fishing. Roughly 7,000 acres are open to hunting at Hillsdale within the Wildlife area and State Park. Common wildlife includes: whitetail deer, bobwhite quail, squirrel, rabbit, beaver, muskrat, and a variety of waterfowl. Birdwatchers that venture to Hillsdale will see Bald Eagles, shorebirds, finches, warblers, sparrows, and hawks. One hundred acres of shallow water habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl is provided by man made wetlands in the Big Bull, Little Bull and Wade Branch drainages of the reservoir.

WATERFOWL REFUGE WILL REMAIN CLOSED TO HUNTING THROUGH THE LATE WATERFOWL SEASON

WETLAND CONDITION AND DUCK USE AT HILLSDALE WILDLIFE AREA (1/9/15)

**Lake is nearly frozen over. All wetland units are frozen (1/9/15)**

  • All wetlands have some water. Rainfall earlier this year maintained sufficient water level to permit pumping of the wetlands.
  • Low water levels in the reservoir earlier this summer allowed vegetation to germinate on mudflats particularly south of 231st Street near the waterfowl refuge. This vegetation provides quality waterfowl cover and forage.

Currently seeing mallards, gadwall, common goldeneye, hooded merganser, and Canada geese.

Browns Wetland, upper (east) unit

Disked and seeded Japanese millet last summer. Good plant cover – smartweed and millet. We pumped ~29 acre-feet into this unit in early September.

Browns Wetland, lower (west) unit
Partially disked last summer to set back trees and favor annuals.

Antioch Wetland
Received limited disturbance in 2014. Over 40 acre feet pumped into the wetland. Also, Antioch Wetland is near quality aquatic vegetation in the main reservoir.

Youth-Mentor Wetland
The Youth-Mentor Wetland was disked and seeded with Japanese millet earlier this summer. An excellent plant response followed and millet has produced many large seed heads. Some water near the water-control structure due to rainfall is sufficient to hold some waterfowl. New pump site needs to be created before this unit can be pumped.

History

Hillsdale is one of the newest reservoirs in Kansas. Originally authorized in 1954 and completed in 1982, the reservoir is part of a comprehensive flood control plan for the Osage and Missouri River basins. In 1989 the Corps of Engineers leased 12,880 acres to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks to be managed for recreation and natural resources. The Wildlife Area includes roughly 5,000 acres located on the northern arms of the Little Bull and Big Bull Creeks.

Hillsdale Waterfowl Report - 01/19/2015
Waterfowl Numbers Species identified during our most recent waterfowl survey (1/9/15) included mallard, hooded merganser, gadwall common goldeneye, and Canada geese. Please remember the WATERFOWL REFUGE WILL REMAIN CLOSED TO HUNTING THROUGH THE LATE WATERFOWL SEASON
Water Level

Antioch Wetland - Over half full. Greater than 40 acre-feet pumped.

Browns Wetland, Upper Unit - Approximately half full with plenty of millet and smartweed inundated. Pumped >30 acre-feet into the unit.

Browns Wetland, Lower Unit - Sufficient for hunting.

Youth-Mentor Wetland - Low. We were unable to pump this unit in 2014; however, rainfall has maintained a pool that may hold some waterfowl.

Hillsdale Lake - Normal elevation (See Army Corps Daily Report). Plenty of aquatic vegetation inundated particularly near the Waterfowl Refuge.

Comments  As of January 9th Hillsdale Lake was nearly completely frozen and all wetland units were frozen.
