|Waterfowl numbers|| |
We estimate 5,000 to 10,000 ducks on the Area. Mostly mallard and pintail. Total goose numbers are estimated to be 25,000 to 50,000 now on the Area. However, duck and goose numbers vary greatly day to day.
Mallard Migration Rank: 3 (subjective estimate of potential mallard numbers. 1=lowest, 10=highest).
|Water level||Pools 1A, 1B and 1C each are at 12.5 inches. Pool 2 is near 13.5 inches, Pools 3A is about 7 inches, 3B is dry except for trapped rain water, 4A is about 10 inches, 4B is near 13.5 inches and Pool 5 has only trapped water.|
|Hunting conditions||We are currently 70% to 90% ice covered. We may open up some more this weekend. Cattail have expanded in area. Pool 3B will likely remain dry through the winter to allow for cattail control work this winter and next spring. Pool 3A will be managed as a primitive hunting pool and closed to motorized watercraft.|
|Expected hunting success||For January 1 thru 7 waterfowl hunters averaged about 0.3 goose per hunt. Too few hunters have been out since then to get a good estimate. Duck season is closed on Cheyenne Bottoms. This information is gathered from the Daily Hunt Permits provided by hunters using the card system and iSportsman.|
Hunters are encouraged to use the electronic Daily Hunt Permit system. This will eventually replace the paper permits.
