McPherson State Fishing Lake is located 6 miles north and 2 miles west of Canton.The lake is set in a very scenic location in the southeastern tip of the Smoky Hills on the upper end of the Gypsum creek drainage and has a nice wooded campground on the west shore. It is impounded by an earthen dam and managed in conjunction with the adjoining Maxwell Wildlife Refuge. Fishing piers, fish feeders, boat ramp, courtesy dock, vault toilets, and camping and picnic facilitiesare provided for fishermen, primarily along the western shoreline. Boating is allowed for fishing purposes only. The lake is known for channel catfish and largemouth bass. Additional species include black crappie, bluegill, black bullhead, and several native sunfishes.

Special Regulations
  • Alcohol and cereal malt beverages are prohibited.
  • Firearms are prohibited.
  • Off-road vehicle and horse use are prohibited.
  • Fireworks are also prohibited.
  • No camping is allowed on the fishing piers.
  • Fires may be built only in provided fire rings or personal grills. Take all trash with you when you leave or place it in the dumpster near the west toilet.
  • There is a 13 to 18 inch slot length limit on largemouth bass.
  • There is a 15 inch minimum length limit on channel catfish.
  • The creel limit for largemouth bass is 5 per day.
  • The creel limit for channel catfish is 2 per day.
  • Archery deer hunting is allowed in the state lake area, except for the campground area, with the main permit only -- no use of additional game tags is allowed. Archery turkey hunting is also allowed at McPherson State Fishing Lake.

In 1943, the Henry Maxwell Estate donated 2,560 acres of land to the Kansas Forestry, Fish, and Game Commission for the creation of a wildlife refuge and fishing lake. Of that area, 306 acres were used for the construction of a 46 acre fishing lake that was built in 1954, stocked in 1955, and opened to fishing in March of 1957.

    The cabin is available year round and will accommodate up to six overnight guests. The air conditioned and heated cabin will sleep six on a double bed, a double fold out futon, a single futon, and a Murphy bed. Renters must provide their own bedding, pillows, towels and toiletries. A hot shower, complete kitchen, refrigerator, stovetop and microwave will make your stay easy. There is an outdoor fire ring.

    This ramp is located on the west shore of the lake not far from the west entrance and has an ADA compliant courtesy dock.

    Enjoy a walk on the trail to observe native plants and wildlife. The 3/4 mile trail follows Gypsum creek, which flows into the lake.

Making a Cabin Reservation

  • Persons 21 years of age or older may make reservation requests. Reservation can be made by telephone, internet, mail or in person one year in advance at the Regional Office. Phone or internet reservations can be made with a credit card. There is no entry fee for this area.
  • Cabin rates are $70 per night plus a non-refundable reservation fee of $14.00 for each transaction. A damage/cleaning fee of $70 will be collected if the cabin is damaged or left unclean at checkout. Dates Available

  • Cabins are reservable year round. Prices are subject to change. Reservations will be handled on a first come first served basis.

Check In and Checkout Time

  • Arrangements will be made at reservation to allow you access into the cabin. If reservation is made online you will need to contact the Region 4 Office to get instructions on checking it to the cabin. After you leave, staff will inspect the cabin and determine condition, damage and contact you about any additional charges.
  • Check in time 2:00 pm
  • Check out time 12:00 pm


  1. Vehicles are permitted on improved roads and parking areas only.
  2. Fires are allowed in fire rings only.
  3. Swimming is not allowed. Wading while fishing is permissible.
  4. Pets must be restrained on a leash not longer than 10 feet or otherwise confined outside the cabin.
  5. Quiet hours are 11 pm to 6 am. Actions which alarm, anger, or disturb others are prohibited.
  6. Game and fish cleaning is prohibited inside the cabin.
  7. Regulations are available in the cabin for your convenience.
