Lane Wildlife Area

Lane Wildlife Area is a 42 acre property that is located 6 1/2 miles north and 3 miles east of Dighton. The original intent was to pump water into the lake from a well on the property. Man-made dikes were constructed to contain any water that was pumped. Unfortunately, the lake has never held sufficient depth do to evaporation and porous soils. Attempts were made to pump enough water to create a wetland, but this was abandoned on the basis of inefficiency. In 2019 it was determined that the well still has water in it. In January 2020 revitalization work was done to the well and it is now operable and will be utilized to flood small areas of the lake bottom for migratory birds.

Hunting:

At present, the area is managed as a public hunting area. The area comprises native grass with two tree/shrub shelterbelt plantings. There are approximately five acres of trees and shrubs. The main species hunted on the area are pheasants, mourning doves, waterfowl, and cottontail rabbits. White-tailed deer and mule deer can also be occasionally found on the area.
