HOLIDAY HUNTING A SPECIAL TIME OF YEAR

Many seasons still open, offer excellent hunting opportunities

PRATT -- The Christmas and New Year holiday season is almost here, and for most people that means time off from work to spend with family and friends. For outdoorsmen and women, it is also a special time to go afield in pursuit of their favorite game. Cool weather often makes game easier to hunt and competition for places to hunt is lighter than earlier in the seasons.

For those looking for a good holiday hunt, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks reminds them that the following season dates remain or will be open in late 2008 and into 2009:

  • Fall turkey -- Dec. 15-31 and Jan. 5-31, 2009;
  • Archery Deer -- Sept. 22-Dec. 31, 2008;
  • Firearm Extended Whitetail Antlerless Season -- Jan.1-4, 2009 ( Open for Units 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 19 only);
  • Special Extended Whitetail Antlerless Season -- Jan. 5-11, 2009 (Open north of highways K-9 and US-24 in Units 7 and 8 only);
  • Archery Extended Whitetail Antlerless Season (DMU 19 only) -- Jan. 5-Jan. 31, 2009;
  • Dove (Eurasian collared and ringed turtle doves only) -- Nov. 20-Feb. 28, 2009;
  • Ducks, Early Zone -- Dec. 20-Jan. 4, 2009;
  • Ducks, High Plains Zone -- Oct. 4-Dec. 30 and Jan. 17-25, 2009;
  • Ducks, Late Zone – Oct. 25-Dec. 28 and Jan. 17-25, 2009;
  • Canada Geese -- Nov. 5-Feb. 15, 2009;
  • White-Fronted Geese -- Nov. 5-Jan. 4, 2009 and Feb. 7- 15, 2009;
  • Light Geese -- Nov. 5-Feb. 15, 2009 and by special conservation order from Feb. 16-April 30, 2009;
  • Pheasant -- Nov. 1-Jan. 31, 2009;
  • Quail -- Nov. 8-Jan. 31, 2009;
  • Prairie Chicken -- East and Northwest zones, Nov. 15-Jan. 31, 2009 and Southwest Zone, Nov. 15-Dec. 31;
  • Squirrel -- June 1-Feb. 28, 2009; and
  • Rabbits -- season open year round.
