LOVEWELL RESERVOIR CLOSED, STATE PARK OPEN

Tests reveal blue-green algae bloom; access to water closed until further notice

LOVEWELL STATE PARK – Officials with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) have advised the public to avoid contact with water at Lovewell Reservoir in Jewell County. Tests show that blue-green algae blooming in the reservoir contain elevated levels of toxins.

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) staff at Lovewell State Park have taken appropriate measures, closing the beach areas, as well as boat ramps. While the park remains open, the Sand Sculpture Contest scheduled for this weekend has been cancelled. KDWP officials want park visitors to understand that this algae bloom may present serious dangers.

"While Lovewell State Park remains open, it is important for visitors to avoid contact with the water or water spray at Lovewell Reservoir and avoid eating fish from the lake until conditions improve and this advisory is rescinded. We encourage people to enjoy the many marvelous outdoor opportunities available in our state and we appreciate our visitors’ understanding during this unusual situation,” said Mike Hayden, KDWP secretary.
