The Bolton Wildlife area is located in Wabaunsee county 2 1/2 miles north and 1 1/2 miles west of Paxico. The area is a continuous tract of land one-half mile wide by two miles long. The 640 acre area consists of primarly native prairie with a small amount of timber located in the northeast corner of the property. Food plots have also been established in the northeast corner of the property and are managed for dove harvest. Hunting opportunities include prairie chicken, bob-white quail, turkey, deer, mourning dove, and squirrel. There are several small ponds that are periodically stocked by the department. Largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish can be found in these ponds.

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism has begun to intensively manage for greater prairie chicken habitat on the property. The Department implemented a patch-burn grazing system in the spring of 2011. Cattle are allowed to freely graze the 600 acres of native range during the months of May-August. Approximately 1/3 of the grazed acres are burned each year. The first documented prairie chicken lek on Bolton Wildlife Area was observed in the spring of 2011!

Special Regulations Now in Effect on the Food Plots.

The food plots will now be non-toxic shot only.

Beginning in March 2015 Bolton Wildlife area will be enrolled in the I-Sportsman check in system to monitor harvest and effort, in an attempt to have good usable data to make future management decisions. For more information about I-Sportsman or to create an account go to kdwpt.isportsman.net or contact my office at (785) 539-9999.

The special hunt for opening day of dove season was a big success with 41 hunters harvesting 433 doves, when last year on opening day there were 89 hunters that harvested 437 doves.  Hunters that drew the hunts were pleased, and the hunting was more enjoyable and safer.

The native grass pasture on the area has been under patch-burn grazing for the last three years. In this system we have been burning 1/3 or the grass each spring to more closely mimic the traditional burning/grazing patterns of the historic tallgrass prairie. The patch burn this fall was conducted on the middle 1/3 and went well.  The cattle were taken out in the middle of September and the habitat conditions in the pasture look great. The West pond is still not to the normal level, but is high enough to run the stock tank behind the dam. The pond on the East side of the property looks pretty good and supports a healthy largemouth bass population.

Mulberry Creek is flowing again and has sunfish in some of the pools.
