During normal stream flow, you can canoe, kayak or take a small boat upstream as far as 1/2 mile Birdwatching is popular and a small hiking trail is provided. There is good channel cat fishing on both upstream and downstream of the crossing. Pillsbury Crossing is one of the areas in the state where spotted bass occur naturally. Other fish which may be found are Largemouth bass, bullhead and carp.

Area News

Pillsbury crossing has been fortunate to have been catching the timely rains this year and as a result the stream has been flowing well.

Restrooms are CLOSED for the fall and winter.

Please remember that alcoholic beverages and swimming are both prohibited. To aid in enforcement of no alcohol on the area KDWPT Law Enforcement, Public Lands, and RCPD have been working closely together to provide a greater officer presence on the area. The area can be accessed from 6am to 10pm daily. Also, please help us in keeping the area clean. Remember to take yours and a previous person’s trash with you!

Pillsbury Crossing is closed to all hunting!

Special Regulations
  • As of September 1st, 2008, Pillsbury Crossing now has a curfew where it will be closed from 10pm to 6am.
  • No alcoholic or cereal malt beverages are allowed on this area.
  • Alcohol convictions will more than likely lead to higher fines and communtiy service.
  • No camping, No swimming, and No hunting.

Special Features: The native limestone rock layer that makes up the road crossing has been used to go across Deep Creek since pre-settlement time.

History

Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Are was donated to the Kansas Forstry Fish & Game Commission through Wildtrust from Dr. and Mrs. Edwin J. Frick of Manhattan.The 59 acres of Deep Creek provide public access to one of the most scenic areas of the northern flint hills region. Located seven miles southeast of Manhattan, the natural flat rock crossing named for pioneer J.H. Pillsbury, who settled here in 1855
