WILDLIFE AND PARKS COMMISSION SETS BIG GAME SEASONS

Deer and antelope seasons set at Commission’s April meeting
GARDEN CITY -- The Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission listened to recommendations concerning the deer and antelope seasons at its public hearing Thursday night in Garden City. Commissioners approved the following season dates for deer.

The archery season will begin Sept. 22, 2008, and close Dec. 31, 2008. The urban antlerless-only white-tailed deer archery season (Deer Management Unit 19 only) will open Jan. 5, 2009, and close Jan. 31, 2009. The urban firearm deer season (Deer Management Unit 19 only) will open Oct. 11, 2008, and close Oct. 19, 2008. The Muzzleloader-only season will open Sept. 22, 2008, and run through Oct. 5, 2008. The season for youth and persons with disabilities is set for Sept. 13, 2008, through Sept. 21, 2008. The regular firearms deer season is Dec. 3, 2008, through Dec. 14, 2008. The extended white-tailed antlerless-only season will be Jan. 1, 2009, through Jan. 4, 2009.
Other dates approved by the Commission included firearm seasons for the military subunits of Fort Leavenworth and Smoky Hill Air National Guard, as well as application deadlines for the limited deer permits. Applications for nonresident deer permits must be postmarked no later than June 2, 2008. Applications for resident firearm either species/either sex permits must be postmarked no later than July 11, 2008.

The Commission approved the following antelope hunting season dates. The archery season will be Sept. 20, 2008, through Sept. 28, 2008 and Oct. 11, 2008, through Oct. 31, 2008. The muzzleloader only season was approved for Sept. 29, 2008, through Oct. 6, 2008. The firearms season is set for Oct. 3, 2008, through Oct. 6, 2008. Applications for resident-only muzzleloader and firearms antelope permits must be postmarked no later than June 13, 2008.
In other business during the evening session, the Commission approved a regulation that creates a reference document that covers activities on public lands. This reference document will provide public land users better information about recreation opportunities on specific public lands.

Finally, the Commission approved additions to the regulation covering cabin fees. Fees for two new cabins scheduled for construction at Atchison and McPherson state fishing lakes were set at $60 per night.
