Sand Hills State Park, a 1,123 acre natural area, has been preserved for its sand dunes, grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands. Popular activities at the park are hiking and horseback riding. Other activities include hunting, bird watching, wildflower walks, jogging and just simple relaxation in the country.

There are eight trails in the park which are broken down into interpretive, hiking and horseback riding trails. There are 14 miles of trails which weave in between 10 to 40-feet high sand dunes, through grasslands and trees, and around ponds. Modern facilities are limited to two vault toilets.

Campgrounds have been constructed and are open for reservations at ReserveAmerica.com

10/28/24: Sand Hills State Park is approaching the fall/winter camping season. Please keep in mind when booking camp sites that the water at the state park is set to turn off on November 1st, 2024 and will be off until the spring of 2025. This includes the bathroom/showers, and dump-stations (you're able to dump but would not have available water to rinse your tank at the station). Also, beginning November 1st all campsites/campgrounds will be walk up only (first come, first serve), no prior reservations can be made during the winter season (November-mid April). Please call our park office with any questions. Winter hours for the park office are Monday-Friday 8am-4:30pm.

Sand Hills State Park has numerous sites still available for Memorial Weekend. As we approach our busy season, please keep in mind to make your reservations early for the 2019 State Fair!

Many parks across the State are dealing with flooding as we approach Memorial Weekend. Not all State Parks in the State are dealing with flooding this Spring. Sand Hills is in great shape and ready to host you for the weekend. Most Parks in the Western half of the State are 100% accessible and have availability. Please contact them to check on availability.

History

In 1974 the Kansas Park and Resources Authority acquired 640 acres of land from Kansas State Industrial Reformatory. These 640 acres bacame the 22nd State Park in Kansas by a House Bill signed by Governor Robert Docking. Shortly after this transfer, the Dillon Family of Hutchinson donated an adjacent 320 acres. With the donation, the Park and Resources Authority was able to acquire another adjacent 163 acres with Federal Land and Water Funds, thus establishing the present 1,123 acre Park.
