GEARING UP FOR BECOMING AN OUTDOORS-WOMAN

Program offers hands-on workshops to women learning outdoor skills

PRATT -- Women from across Kansas will learn outdoor skills at the annual Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop at Rock Springs 4-H Center, near Junction City, on Sept. 23-25.

The event is sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP). Designed primarily for women, this program is an opportunity for anyone 18 years of age or older who may never have tried these activities but have hoped for an opportunity to learn, are beginners wanting to improve skills, know how to do some of these activities but would like to try some new ones, or enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

This workshop features an environment that is almost exclusively hands-on. Seminars help participants become familiar with equipment and techniques related to dozens of different outdoor activities. Expert instructors guide participants, who may choose from more than 40 different activities, including hunting, fishing, wild game cooking, orienteering, float tubing, archery, stream ecology, canoeing, natural history, backpacking, camping, and more.

The workshop includes six meals, two nights of lodging in a cabin ($180) or tent ($175), supplies, and use of equipment. Eight $100 scholarships have been awarded to date, and more may be available, based on financial need, for first-time participants.
