Dec. 1 deadline for State Capacity Grant Program proposals

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced that $20,000 is available for building partnerships with other conservation organizations in the state through the Playa Lakes Joint Venture (PLJV) State Capacity Grant Program. This program provides an opportunity for KDWP to collaborate with others to promote projects or programs that reduce bottlenecks in habitat delivery west of the Flint Hills.

The PLJV suggests a process whereby KDWP requests advice from potential partners regarding the use of Capacity Grant Funds. Once a decision is made, partners submit a proposal to the PLJV on behalf of the state.

For 2008, KDWP is seeking partners to help develop the following:

• a comprehensive brochure of habitat programs available to private landowners;
• programs (e.g., kiosks, scenic tours) describing the value of playas and associated grassland habitats; and
• educational workshops for landowners that promote benefits of playa lake grassland habitats and various conservation strategies.

All state conservation organizations interested in pursuing any of these efforts with KDWP are encouraged to contact Joe Kramer, PLJV Management Board Member for Kansas, at 620-672-5911 to discuss ideas and obtain a grant application form.
