2007 KANSAS HUNTING SEASONS SOON TO BE IN FULL SWING

November ushers in the majority of Kansas hunting seasons

Autumn has arrived in the Sunflower State, ushering in Kansas hunting seasons, which will be in full swing by mid-November. Pheasant season -- perhaps Kansas’ most popular hunt -- opened Nov. 3 and continues through Jan. 31, 2008. Kansas ranks high among states for pheasant production and attracts hunters from across the nation.

Kansas quail season opens Nov. 10, and continues through Jan 20, 2008. Season dates for prairie chickens are similar to last fall. The regular season is divided into three units: the Northwest Unit (north of I-70 and west of U.S. 281) and the East Unit (all of Kansas east of U.S. 281) season runs Nov. 17-Jan. 31 with a daily bag limit of two, and the Southwest Unit (south of I-70 and west of U.S. 281) season is Nov. 17-Dec. 31 with a daily bag of one.

Fall turkey seasons run Oct. 1-Nov. 27, Dec. 10-31, and Jan. 7-31, 2008.

Canada goose seasons run Oct. 27-28 and Nov. 7-Feb. 17, 2008. White-fronted goose seasons are Oct. 27-28, Nov. 7-Jan. 6, 2008, and Feb. 9-17, 2008. Light goose seasons are Oct. 27-28 and Nov. 7-Feb. 17, 2008. Additionally, a light goose conservation order allows hunting of light geese from Feb. 18-April 30.

Duck season dates and zones include the following:

  • High Plains Zone -- Oct. 6-Jan. 1, 2008, and Jan. 19-Jan. 27, 2008;
  • Early Zone -- Oct.13-Dec.9, and Dec. 15-30; and
  • Late Zone -- Oct. 27-Dec. 30 and Jan. 19-Jan. 27, 2008.

Sandhill crane season opens Nov. 7 and continues through Jan. 3, 2008. Hunters must use special caution in the state’s central corridor, where protected whooping cranes also migrate.

An opportunity to take doves still remains, as well, with a Nov. 1-16 dove season.
Deer seasons for 2007 include the following:

  • archery season -- Oct. 1-Dec. 31;
  • Urban Unit 19 early firearms -- Oct. 13-21;
  • regular firearms season -- Nov. 28-Dec. 9;
  • extended whitetail antlerless only season (selected units) -- Jan. 1-6, 2008; and
  • Urban Unit extended archery (Deer Management Unit 19 only) -- Jan. 7-31, 2008.

While deer seasons are similar to last year’s, there are two notable changes from 2006. First, the extended season for whitetail antlerless deer was reduced from seven days last season to six days in January of 2008. Also, whitetail antlerless game tags are authorized in two additional units (1 and 2, located in northwest Kansas) where they were not authorized in 2006.

The Kansas furbearer hunting and trapping season opens Nov. 14 and continues through Feb. 15, 2008.

More information on Kansas hunting seasons can be obtained in the 2007 Kansas Hunting and Furharvesting Regulations Summary available at most license vendors, or online.
