Hunters, anglers, and others enjoy convenience, reduced prices in fall and winter

Many people don't think of Kansas state parks once summer is over, but many others see them as great places to visit and enjoy the outdoors without the congestion often encountered during the peak use months. During the off-season, hunters and anglers probably use parks more than any other visitors, and the growing number of cabins in parks makes a stay even more inviting. Cabins provide all the amenities of home and proximity to one's favorite outdoor activity. Cabin rental fees vary depending on size, days of the week, and time of the year.

During the park off-season -- Oct. 1-March 31 -- cabin fees, like park entrance fees, are reduced. Entrance fees are the same for all parks. Off-season state park vehicle entrance permit fees are as follow:

• Daily Vehicle permit -- $3.70 (senior/disabled, $2.60);
• Annual Vehicle permit -- $19.35 (senior/disabled, $10.75); and
• Additional Annual Vehicle permit -- $11.85 (senior/disabled, $7).

Costs listed include applicable service fees, except online purchase convenience fee. Permits purchased in either the off-season or the prime season are valid for the remainder of the calendar year. 2008 permits will go on sale Dec. 17.

KDWP's Parks Division operates a system of 24 state parks and the Prairie Spirit Rail-Trail. In addition to cabins, most state parks provide utility and primitive camping and are located adjacent to lakes or reservoirs. Camping and utility fees remain unchanged although some camping fees are cheaper if purchased in the off-season.

In addition to camping facilities, parks offer boat ramps, courtesy docks, shelter houses, trails, and a variety of other amenities. Parks also host numerous special events, such as concerts and festivals, throughout the year.
