HUNTERS CAN DONATE EXCESS VENISON THROUGH FARMERS AND HUNTERS FEEDING THE HUNGRY

Meat processors, food banks, donors help provide more than 100,000 meals
TONGANOXIE -- With the help of hunters, meat processors, and private donors, Kansas Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (KSFHFH) annually provides more than 100,000 meals to those in need, a figure that grows every year.

The Kansas deer firearms season -- Nov. 28-Dec. 9 this year -- is the busiest time for the organization. Hunters donate hundreds of deer and occasionally an elk or even a bison. The organization supplies meat to nearly 100 food banks across the state through more than 30 meat processors.

Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) began in Maryland in 1997. It now has chapters in all 50 states. Initially brought to Kansas in 2001, it has grown dramatically and is funded through donations from private businesses, churches, clubs, conservation organizations, and individuals. KDWP makes it easy to help. When outdoorsmen and women buy licenses, permits, or stamps, they can donate $2 to support this program, which the agency collects for KSFHFH.
