JANUARY DEER HUNT AN ANTLERLESS AFFAIR
Three deer seasons open the New Year's first month
PRATT -- The regular Kansas firearm deer season is over, but many deer hunters still look forward to hunting in January. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will conduct a firearm extended whitetail antlerless season Jan.1- 4, 2009 (open for Deer Management Units 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 19 only), a special extended whitetail antlerless season Jan. 5-Jan. 11, 2009 (open north of highways K-9 and US-24 in Units 7 and 8 only), and an archery extended whitetail antlerless season Jan. 5- 31, 2009 (in Unit 19 only).
Many hunters who did not fill a deer permit during one of the regular 2008 seasons (muzzleloader, archery, firearms) may use that permit during these seasons. However, all permits revert to Antlerless-Only White-tailed Deer permits, and unit restrictions printed on the permit still apply.
During the regular seasons, the law requires a hunter to have a permit allowing the harvest of an antlered deer before they can purchase antlerless permits. However, after Dec. 30, 2008, hunters may purchase antlerless permits without first purchasing an antlered permit.
