COUNCIL GROVE YOUTH TURKEY HUNT A BIG SUCCESS
National Wild Turkey Federation’s Munker’s Creek Limbhangers Chapter hosts 8th annual special hunt
COUNCIL GROVE -- Ten lucky youngsters made memories to last a lifetime on April 5 at the 8th Annual Council Grove Turkey Hunt. The Munker’s Creek Limbhangers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) hosted the event. It was the second youth hunt organized by the Council Grove chapter.
Youngsters ages 10 to 16 and their parents arrived Friday, April 4, for a wild turkey biology and hunting discussion presented by NWTF and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) staff. After a hotdog supper, each youth had a chance to learn basic gun handling and shoot and pattern shotguns. Everyone received a turkey-hunting related door prize.
Saturday morning began with breakfast before hunters paired off with guides and departed for the woods. All of the youth-mentor teams heard and saw turkeys. Guides pointed out sign during the hunt and taught youth calling techniques. At the end of the hunt, two turkeys had been harvested.
“Of all the things I do each year this is probably the most rewarding,” said Brent Konen, KDWP wildlife area manager and NWTF volunteer who organizes the hunt each year.
