One out of seven applicants successful in first draw; second draw deadline Oct. 1
PRATT — Applicants from the first drawing for Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) Special Hunts can go online to find out if they were successful. There were 342 hunts awarded from 2,141 applications, a demand that exceeds supply seven-fold.

All applicants will have another chance in the second drawing that takes place Oct. 1. The application deadline for the second draw is Sept. 30.

Some hunters may be confused over the hunt categories on the application. Certain hunts are for certain species. However, categories for types of hunters who can apply for various hunts may be more confusing.

There are four hunt categories:

• youth — requires that a supervising adult 21 years or older be present for youth 18 and younger, but the adult can’t hunt;
• mentor/youth — allows a youth 18 and younger to participate with supervising mentor, and mentor may hunt;
• mentor/novice — requires at least one novice (persons 18 years old or younger or a person who has never possessed a hunting license) be accompanied by a mentor (an experienced hunter 21 years or older). Both novice and mentor may hunt; and
• open — the most popular category, there are no restrictions on age or experience. This menu of hunt categories provides more options and enables KDWP to create more opportunities to recruit new hunters. Hunting is one of the very safest outdoor activities, but some individuals believe an adult or mentor on a youth or novice hunt should not participate to focus on the safety of the youth.

Whatever hunt category is preferred, remember that the second drawing is open and can be applied for online at kdwp.state.ks.us.com or by telephone at 620-672-5911. Persons who applied in first draw may apply again in the second, even if they were successful in the first draw.
