Duck and goose regulations to highlight evening public hearing

TOPEKA — The Kansas Wildlife and Parks Commission invites all interested persons to attend a public meeting and hearing on Aug. 12 at the Mankato Community Center, 214 N High in Mankato. The afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m., and the evening public hearing will begin at 7 p.m.

The afternoon session will begin with overviews of the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) fiscal status, as well as general discussion of topics including Glen Elder State Park, a petition to add the lesser prairie chicken to the List of Threatened and Endangered Species, permanent big game regulations, and the new Farm Bill Voluntary Public Access program. The afternoon will conclude with a workshop session on spring turkey regulations.

The commission will recess at 4 p.m., then reconvene at 7 p.m. at the same location when the workshop session will continue, covering park and cabin fee regulations, hunting/fishing permit/license combination packages, and fishing regulations.

After the workshop session, the commission will conduct a public hearing to set late migratory bird seasons and regulations. Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks staff are expecting liberal seasons and bag limits similar to last year.

Time will be set aside in both the afternoon and evening sessions for public comment on topics that are not on the agenda. If necessary, the commission will recess on Aug. 12 and reconvene at the same location at 9 a.m., Aug. 13 to complete its business.
