CHEYENNE BOTTOMS - Last Updated: 2/18/2019

Waterfowl numbers

Regular goose season is closed.  The only open season is the spring conservation order for light geese.

Around 250,000 geese, mostly snows, but there are about 20,000 each of Canadas and whitefronts.  7,500 ducks, mostly mallards and pintails.

If the report has not been updated in a few days, please assume that conditions and bird numbers are the same as the last update.

Water level

Pool 1A is 51", 1B and 1C are around 47", 2 has about 30", 3A has 27", 3B has 25", 4A has 20", 4B has 22", 5 has 13".

99% ice cover, and it appears the ice will stay on for several days.

Hunting conditions

Pool 2:  Good moist soil production in areas that were sprayed the last couple years and in areas that were free of cattails.  About 200 acres of cattails was aerially sprayed on 8/1/18.

Pool 3A:  All of the pool was aerially sprayed for cattails on 8/1/18.  Like always it will be closed to motorized boats.

Pool 3B:  209 acres were disked twice and drilled to millet.  Another 40 acres was no-till drilled to millet.  Another 300 acres of cattails have been disked.  Good moist soil production.

Pool 4A:  Some moist soil production.

Pool 4B:  80 acres were disked twice and planted to millet.  Another 38 acres were no-till drilled to millet.  Good moist soil production.

Pool 5: All 1,400 acres were burned and disked at least 5 times.  There are a few areas of cattails along the dike and in some deeper spots that are still too wet to disk.  Pool 5 will be open for teal season.

Burned an additional 1,500 acres of uplands and small wetlands in Pool 5 and 3B.

Use the foot crossings along the roads in all pools

Expected hunting success Poor. Geese are extremely unpredictable at this time.  Very few geese are being harvested.  For the 2018-2019 regular duck season, hunters averaged 2.58 ducks per hunter
