CHEYENNE BOTTOMS - Last Updated: 11/8/2018

Waterfowl numbers

50,000-75,000 ducks. Still have a good mix of shovelers, teal, pintails, gadwall, wigeon, and a lot of divers.  Mallards currently make up about 10% of the ducks on the area.  Goose numbers have increased, around 50,000-75,000, few more whitefronts than Canadas and snows.

If the report has not been updated in a few days, please assume that conditions and bird numbers are the same as the last update.

Water level

PIKE LOT IN 3B HAS A LOTOF WATER ON IT, AND IS CLOSED. USE FOOT CROSSINGS THROUGHOUT THE AREA UNLESS YOU LIKE FILLED WADERS.

Pool 1A is 50", 1B and 1C are around 45", 2 has about 32", 3A has 25", 3B has 25", 4A has 23", 4B has 23", 5 has 28".

Water levels will not change much for the remainder of the season.

Hunting conditions

Pool 2:  Good moist soil production in areas that were sprayed the last couple years and in areas that were free of cattails.  About 200 acres of cattails was aerially sprayed on 8/1/18.

Pool 3A:  All of the pool was aerially sprayed for cattails on 8/1/18.  Like always it will be closed to motorized boats.

Pool 3B:  209 acres were disked twice and drilled to millet.  Another 40 acres was no-till drilled to millet.  Another 300 acres of cattails have been disked.  Good moist soil production.

Pool 4A:  Some moist soil production.

Pool 4B:  80 acres were disked twice and planted to millet.  Another 38 acres were no-till drilled to millet.  Good moist soil production.

Pool 5: All 1,400 acres were burned and disked at least 5 times.  There are a few areas of cattails along the dike and in some deeper spots that are still too wet to disk.  Pool 5 will be open for teal season.

Burned an additional 1,500 acres of uplands and small wetlands in Pool 5 and 3B.

Use the foot crossings along the roads in all pools

Expected hunting success Fair.  Some of the water on private ground as dried up, but birds are still scattered and are figuring out where the refuges are.  For the period of 11/3-11/8, hunters have averaged 2.05 ducks per hunter.  During that period, 16.5% of the harvest was mallards.  Very few geese are being harvested at this time.
