JAYHAWK MARINA HELPS KICK OFF NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK
May 21 safe boating course, vessel safety check planned at Hillsdale State Park
HILLSDALE STATE PARK -- Safe boating saves lives, and to help get National Safe Boating Week (May 20 - 26) started off right, Jayhawk Marina at Hillsdale State Park is offering a Safe Boating course on Sunday, May 21. As an additional service to boaters, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) will offer a vessel safety check lane at the marina on that day.
Many boating fatalities occur because people aren't educated about boating safety and navigational rules of the water. Taking a safe boating course will make compliance with Kansas’ age requirement law easy, and it may make boaters eligible for discounts on personal watercraft or boat insurance. Most importantly, it will prepare boaters for a fun and safe day on the water.
Classes begin at 8 a.m. and end about 3 p.m. Space is limited, so phone 913-557-9900 to reserve a spot.
In addition, courtesy vessel safety checks will be performed in the parking lot of Jayhawk Marina from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. for boaters wishing to take advantage of this service. A vessel safety check is an examination of boats conducted by KDWP staff to confirm that they meet both state and federal requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any law enforcement agency. Boat owners will be supplied with a copy of the evaluation so that they may correct any deficiencies found as a result of the inspection.
Jayhawk Marina recently celebrated its one-year anniversary as the only on-site location for boat and personal watercraft slip rentals, boat storage, fuel sales, boat rentals, and convenience items. The marina provides visitors with a wide range of other services and projects for camping, boating, fishing, and water recreation.
