NEW CABINS OPEN AT OTTAWA STATE LAKE, MINED LAND WILDLIFE AREA

Open for reservation year-round, cabins are comfortable accommodations
for anglers and hunters

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced the opening of two new rental cabins, one at Ottawa State Fishing Lake and the other at Mined Land Wildlife Area's Trout Pit 30.

Ottawa offers one modern rental cabin set apart in a native prairie overlooking the lake. This area charges no entry fees. The cabin is available year-round and will accommodate as many as six overnight guests. The area around the lake provides hiking, wildlife viewing, primitive camping year-round, and a reservable group shelter for family get-togethers.

The lake’s main attraction is fishing, but limited hunting is available, and a few special draw hunts occur annually.

The air conditioned and heated cabin will sleep six comfortably on one queen, three twins, and one full futon beds. Renters must provide their own bedding, pillows, towels, and toiletries. A hot shower, complete kitchen, refrigerator, stovetop, and microwave are included, along with an outdoor patio with gas grill and picnic table. A fire ring is available for evening campfires. Other amenities include an outside hydrant, kitchen utensils, dishes, pots, pans, and coffee pot.

Reservations for the Ottawa State Fishing Lake cabin may be made by telephone, mail, or in person at KDWP Region 1 Office, 1426 Highway 183 Alt. in Hays. Reservations will be taken no more than one year in advance. Phone reservations require a credit card payment. Cabin rates are $60 per night plus a non-refundable $12.00 reservation fee. A damage/cleaning fee of $60 will be collected if the cabin is damaged or left unclean at checkout.

The Mined Land Wildlife Area cabin is located on Unit 30 of the area overlooking Trout Lake. It is available to rent year-round and will accommodate as many as six overnight guests. Mined Land offers fishing, hunting, and wildlife viewing year-round. The trout lake is a clear, deep-water strip-mine lake, known best for its trout fishery. The Mined Land Wildlife Area cabin provides bathroom, shower, heating and air conditioning, microwave, two-burner stove and oven, refrigerator, outside hydrant, charcoal grill, table and four chairs, dishes, pots and pans, kitchen utensils, coffee maker, and toaster. Beds include one double pull-out futon, three singles, and one single futon. Renters must bring their own blankets, sheets, soap, shampoo, pillows, towels, and grilling supplies.

To ensure availability, reservations should be made seven days prior to the arrival date. A reservation requires the $60 cabin rental fee plus a $12.00 nonrefundable reservation fee.
