Blue-green algae bloom receded; lake users may swim, fish, boat
MEADE — For most of the summer, Meade State Fishing Lake, southwest of Meade, has been partially closed or under an advisory or warning for a blue-green algae bloom. But the most recent testing of the lake on Aug. 8 by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), found almost no evidence of the algae, and the agency has lifted all advisories and warnings for the lake. Meade State Fishing Lake is now open to all activities, including boating, fishing, swimming, and other allowed activities that involve contact with the water.

“This is great news,” said Meade State Park manager Matt Trujillo. “There aren’t too many lakes in this part of the state where folks can enjoy themselves, and I’m sure this will be welcome news to them. It’s certainly good news for the park with the Labor Day weekend approaching.”

Advisories and warning for blue-green algae blooms — which can cause illness in humans and animals — remain in effect for other lakes across the state. As information is compiled, KDHE will post a complete update on all Kansas lakes affected on their website, www.kdheks.gov/news/index.html.
