OUTDOORS-WOMAN WORKSHOP FULL
August 18, 2011
Classes filled fast for popular Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program; apply early next year
PRATT — Women wanting to learn more about the outdoors through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism’s (KDWPT) Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) Program will have to wait until next spring unless they have already enrolled for the Sept. 23-25 event. The agency has announced that the fall class is full, and staff are maintaining a long waiting list in case anyone drops out.
The next workshop will be May 18-20, 2012. Registration materials will be posted online at the KDWPT website, www.kdwpt.ks.us, late this year or in early 2012. Click “Services/Education/Becoming-an-Outdoors-Woman” for details. Those who would like to receive a brochure and registration form for the spring workshop by mail when they become available should phone 620-672-5911 or click “email” at the above website.
BOW is designed to provide women a chance to learn about hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation in a friendly, supportive environment. During the three-day workshop at Rock Springs 4-H Center this September, volunteer instructors will teach participants a variety of skills, including fishing techniques, wingshooting, camping, orienteering, rifle marksmanship, botany, dog handling, archery, and more.
KDWPT held its first BOW workshop in 1994, so this will mark the event's 18th anniversary. One hundred women have enrolled in the program this year.
Studies have shown that many women do not participate in outdoor recreation because they have not had an opportunity to learn the outdoor skills that make these activities enjoyable. The BOW program has shown that when that opportunity is offered, women take advantage of it with enthusiasm and self-confidence.
