Please come join us at Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park for an evening of sunset, moon rise, and an Open Park Night!

Friday, October 2nd Event #1: Sunset off trail photo opportunity will begin at 6:00pm. Meet at the Ramada Overlook. Let’s enjoy a stroll off trail for photographing the sunset! Sunset is at 7:23pm. After the sunset, we will hike back to the parking lot on the Life on the Rocks Trail. We need to be back up on the trail by about 7:45pm. The moon rises at 8:11pm, so we will have some light to help us back! If you would like light to help navigate the trail back to the parking lot, please bring a red light! Please call the Lake Scott State Park office to save a spot! 620-872-2061. Or email Sara Kay at sarakay.carrell@ks.gov.

Friday October 2nd Event #2: Moonrise off trail photo opportunity will begin at 8:15pm. Meet at the Ramada Overlook. (If I am not there, I am still on the trail making my way back! I’ll hurry!) Let’s enjoy some on trail and off trail photographing of the moon rising! Moon rise begins at 8:11 pm. Plan to be able to shoot moon photos off trail until about 10:00pm. Please bring a red light to help navigate to some photo areas off trail. Please no white lights to mess up our night vision! If we are lucky, we will have clear skies to have the moon’s full illumination and we will not need lights! Please call the Lake Scott State Park office to save a spot! 620-872-2061. Or email Sara Kay at sarakay.carrell@ks.gov.

Friday October 2nd Event #3: Open Park Night! Come out to hike ON DESIGNATED TRAILS in the full moonlight! The gate will remain open until 12:30am. Enjoy having access to the designated trails and overlooks at Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park during the full moon! Bring lawn chairs, picnics, and blankets!

Things to Remember:

Please dim light as you pull into the parking lot! Help visitors maintain their night vision!

Wear boots or footwear that covers the feet. Bring water, a snack, binoculars, and a hiking stick! Please do not underestimate the terrain. During the summer, it is HOT down in the canyons. Come to Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park and enjoy an off trail guided hike lead by a park ranger! Be prepared for rough hiking, uneven terrain, and scrambling thru grass and brush. Wear boots or footwear that covers the feet. Bring water, a snack, binoculars, and a hiking stick! Please do not underestimate the terrain. During the summer, it is HOT down in the canyons. The rock formations do a great job of blocking the wind, so BE PREPARED for temperatures to be 10+ degrees warmer during the hike in the rocks! During the winter, it can be pretty chilly in the rock formations! The winds are predominantly North or Northwest winds, which means the wind whips right thru the canyon bottoms and can chill us down!

We will start at the Life on the Rocks trail head and venture off in a direction that will take us off into the bottoms of the rock formations. Once at the base of the rocks, we will explore the various nooks, crannies, and spires of Little Jerusalem's Niobrara chalk formations. Along the way, we learn about the grasses, forbs, mammals, reptiles, insects, geology, and other great things that nature presents to us.  Be prepared for rough hiking, uneven terrain, ups and downs, and scrambling thru grass and brush. No set path is followed! So be ready for an adventure! It is an intermediate level hike/terrain. We hike at a moderate pace with stop and go to learn, talk, ask questions, and take photos.

**Hikes will be cancelled by inclement weather!** If it is snowing, blizzarding, freezing rain, raining, lightning, or any other unsafe weather brought on by Mother Nature, all activities will be canceled at Little Jerusalem. Scott City and Oakley are the closest towns to search for weather on National Weather Service. Please call the Historic Lake Scott office for the latest update on weather cancellations, 620-872-2061
